Olmeca Altos Añejo Tequila

Robyn has been working at the top of the hospitality scene for over a decade. In addition to being on the opening team for some incredible bars including Fare and Jason Atherton’s Sosharu, she’s been Head Bartender for a number of venues including The Edition Hotel, leading the lobby bar to a Spirited Awards nomination.

A good añejo will show characteristics of the ageing process in the barrel - an amber colour, woodiness, spice and a touch of vanilla will usually be present. Olmeca Altos Añejo is aged for 18 months in ex-bourbon barrels and as a result has a smooth and creamy mouthfeel and vanilla, almond, and caramel flavours with a woody, black pepper finish. The nose is an incredibly appetising chocolate orange with hints of apricot and roasted agave.

This is a great tequila to gift someone who loves a nightcap or something lovely to sip on with dessert at the end of a dinner party.

This tequila is an ideal choice for someone who loves dark spirits, particularly whisky drinkers who might want to explore another spirit.

The rich, complex flavours that come from the age of this tequila make it a perfect option for making a tequila twist on a Manhattan. The roasted agave and vanilla notes really shine here with a little bit of sweet vermouth and orange bitters to help boost those flavours further.

Stirred over cubed ice, the Tequila Manhattan cocktail is a simple and refined show stopper. It’s important there’s lots of ice in the mixing glass so that it doesn’t dilute too quickly and stays cold. I would serve this with an orange zest to garnish to really bring out those chocolate orange notes on the nose.

To serve this Manhattan I would use a chilled martini glass or coupe, but if you’re going to drink it neat, a small stemmed glass would be great.

This tequila makes a great nightcap when sipped alongside dessert. The tequila Manhattan is the perfect digestif cocktail and would go really well with something rich like a chocolate cake or sticky toffee pudding.
