Saint Lucia's finest rum, Chairman's Reserve, is as iconic as the Piton Mountains which adorn its bottle. Though the brand was launched in 1999, the story of Chairman’s Reserve started decades before.
In 1931, Denis Barnard built a distillery at Dennery, on the eastern coast of Saint Lucia. In 1972, St. Lucia Distillers was formed when the two remaining distilleries, Dennery and Geest, were merged. In 1999, the rum revolutionary and "Chairman" of St. Lucia Distillers, Laurie Barnard, son of Denis, launched Chairman's Reserve - an innovative blend of column and pot still rums.
You won't find an age statement on a bottle of Chairman's Reserve. This is because of the philosophy set forth by the late "Chairman" Laurie Barnard, which this quote of his can best summarise: “We do not put age statements on our rums because we believe passionately that complexity and balance can only be maximised by blending old, complex, but often ‘woody’ rums with fresher but characterful rums.”
Millie Milliken adds: “Chairman’s Reserve Spiced is made from molasses and started its life as a blend of Coffey and pot still rum blends, aged separately in ex-Bourbon before being brought together to rest in oak vats. The addition of local spices and fruits - like cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, lemon, orange peels - is what makes this a 'spiced' rum, a tradition that goes back generations and is still done domestically today.”
