Dating back to 1888, when brand founder Paul Jones Jr, having fallen in love with a southern belle, asked her to wear a corsage of roses for a ball if she returned his feelings. She wore four roses, which gave Paul Jones Jr the name for his new whiskey, with the company originally founded in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1890, after Georgia enacted prohibition, operations were moved to Louisville, Kentucky, and then to its own distillery in Lawrenceburg in 1910. The distillery was one of six granted a medical licence to operate during nationwide Prohibition, which set up Four Roses to become the US’ biggest bourbon brand in the 1930s and 40s.
In 1942, the brand was acquired by Canadian spirits giant Seagram, and turned into a Canadian-style blended whiskey domestically, while staying the same for export markets, particularly Europe and Japan, where the brand gained significant popularity. In 2002, the Four Roses was acquired by Kirin, a Japanese beer and spirits company, and restored to its historical 100 per cent Kentucky Straight Bourbon style in the United States. Four Roses is known for employing several unique methods among bourbon brands, including the use of multiple high-rye mashbills, several yeast strains, and single racking their warehouses, resulting in a mellow, distillate-driven whiskey.
