This classic Boston style shaker and strainer combo is ideal for the seasoned or soon-to-be adept cocktail makers out there and features embossed ribs for a better grip, plus a weighted capped bottom that provides stability as well as a thickness to keep cocktails cold and hands comfortable while shaking.
There's a reason why you'll see bartenders mainly shaking up a storm with a Boston, rather than a Cobbler or French style shaker. It's large (allowing to create greater quantities), simple and allows speedy service - so if you're shaking up cocktails for a large group of people, it's worth taking the time to practice using a Boston.
Coming in two tin halves of differing sizes, the ingredients go in the larger of the two tins. The smaller tin slots needs to go into the larger tin at a slight angle, and this is where things can get tricky (or messy) as you need to make sure it's nice and secure before shaking. But don't worry, with some practice - you'll soon be competing with the professionals!
If you've used ingredients other than spirits, such as fruit or leaves, you're going to need the strainer. Once your drink is sufficiently shaken, keep the Hawthorne strainer over the Boston tin with your liquid in and carefully pour into your vessel of choice. Voila! No seeds, pith or other debris in your drink (although it's worth having a fine strainer on hand too, for some of the finer debris).
Top tip: With a good smack on the top of the smaller tin, the two tins should be firmly locked. Just make sure you hold the two sides with a strong grip when you shake!
