Robyn's Liquid Low-Down
"This is a perfect example of an añejo tequila, it’s great on its own for sipping neat or on the rocks, but also works well in classic cocktails that call for a rich, dark spirit."

A good añejo will show characteristics of the ageing process in the barrel - an amber colour, woodiness, spice and a touch of vanilla will usually be present. Olmeca Altos Añejo is aged for 18 months in ex-bourbon barrels and as a result has a smooth and creamy mouthfeel and vanilla, almond, and caramel flavours with a woody, black pepper finish. The nose is an incredibly appetising chocolate orange with hints of apricot and roasted agave. |
This is a great tequila to gift someone who loves a nightcap or something lovely to sip on with dessert at the end of a dinner party. |
This tequila is an ideal choice for someone who loves dark spirits, particularly whisky drinkers who might want to explore another spirit. |
How to Drink
The rich, complex flavours that come from the age of this tequila make it a perfect option for making a tequila twist on a Manhattan. The roasted agave and vanilla notes really shine here with a little bit of sweet vermouth and orange bitters to help boost those flavours further. |
Stirred over cubed ice, the Tequila Manhattan cocktail is a simple and refined show stopper. It’s important there’s lots of ice in the mixing glass so that it doesn’t dilute too quickly and stays cold. I would serve this with an orange zest to garnish to really bring out those chocolate orange notes on the nose. |
To serve this Manhattan I would use a chilled martini glass or coupe, but if you’re going to drink it neat, a small stemmed glass would be great. |
This tequila makes a great nightcap when sipped alongside dessert. The tequila Manhattan is the perfect digestif cocktail and would go really well with something rich like a chocolate cake or sticky toffee pudding. |

About Olmeca Altos
Olmeca Altos is an incredibly well loved tequila brand in the bar industry. It was first released in 2016 and was started by two renowned bartenders from London, Henry Besant and Dre Masso. They set out to make the perfect tequila for bartenders, something that was high quality and perfect for sipping but also well suited for use in cocktails.
Created in Los Altos (or ‘Highlands’), a region within the state of Jalisco, Olmeca Altos’ distillery location, 2,100 metres above sea level, was chosen based on its notorious highland climate that makes for the best quality agaves. The volcanic rich red soil that characterises this area is a key element for Olmeca Altos’ tequila profile: spicy with a fruity bouquet, usually more rounded and naturally sweet. All of Olmeca Altos’ agave is cooked in brick ovens for three days, before being roller milled and using the 400 year old, traditional wheel-press or Tahona to preserve and achieve a blend of punchiness and smoothness.
As a company, Olmeca Altos works hard to remain as sustainable as they can be and the distillery recycles 99% of all its solid waste. In addition to that, they redesigned their iconic glass bottle to reduce the glass weight by 20%, thus reducing CO2 emissions by 20%.
