Robyn's Liquid Low-Down
"El Tequileño is one of my favourite blanco tequilas and features on the menu at both Hacha locations. It’s smooth, light and flavourful, making it perfect for both sipping or cocktails and a great gateway tequila for newbies to the category."

Light and fresh, this is a great example of a blanco tequila, as it hits all the classic flavour notes of what I would be looking for in a blanco but that extra citrusy brightness at the front of the palate makes it distinctively El Tequileño. Its crisp pear and citrus flavours are balanced out by a vegetal grassy note, with a subtle black pepper finish. A great blanco tequila will have notable cooked agave notes that are clean and subtle as it’s unaged, matched with either more floral or vegetal top notes, depending on where the agaves were grown, and sometimes with a peppery finish. |
El Tequileño Margaritas on a sunny day in the garden with friends would be an absolutely perfect afternoon, they’re so delicious you won’t even realise when the sun goes down! |
This is a great tequila for those who are new to the category, but also flavourful and complex enough that seasoned tequila drinkers will love it too. |
How to Drink
This goes amazingly well in a Tommy’s Margarita. A super refreshing modern take on the classic Margarita, the fruity peppery notes of the tequila really shines here with the zesty lime juice and a touch of agave for balance. When it comes to tequila cocktails, El Tequileño Blanco is historically important as it’s the chosen tequila for the La Batanga cocktail. This was created by Don Javier of the world-famous La Capilla Cantina in Tequila, Jalisco. |
Serve your Tommy's Margarita shaken and strained over cubed ice. This drink is best served extra cold to maintain that crisp freshness, but the dilution and aeration from shaking are important to balance the lime and agave syrup. |
This would be best served in a Rocks glass over ice. A salt rim isn’t traditional for a Tommy’s but it’s still a tasty addition. If you ever find yourself at La Cantina in Tequila town, the La Batanga is made with El Tequileño here. It’s a mix of Coca-Cola, lime juice and El Tequileno with a salt rim, served in a Highball and famously stirred with a knife. |
A crisp Tommy’s Margarita definitely calls for something with a bit of spice or barbecued! It balances so well with strong flavours and will wash away any heat from the chillies. A La Batanga is such a refreshing long drink, the lime juice takes away the sweetness from the coca-cola. It would go really well with a citrusy ceviche or some Baja fish tacos. |
